Introduction
This exam is organized by the AAPT. It is a qualifying examination for the USAPhO. Each year, four hundred students qualify for the USA Physics Olympiad abbreviated as the USAPhO. Twenty students advance to form the USA physics team. They train for ten days and after that, five students are chosen to represent the country at the international physics Olympiad.

Around six thousand high and middle school students who are US permanent residents or citizens take the exam every year. The exam is administered locally and takes place in February.
