Biological treatment – Understanding functionality, uses & applications!

Biological treatment systems are advanced biotechnological solutions for managing waste and pollutants through biological means. These systems leverage natural biological processes, primarily involving microorganisms, to degrade and transform organic and some inorganic materials into less harmful substances. The application of these systems spans various sectors, including wastewater treatment, environmental remediation, and agriculture. This article delves into the mechanics of biological treatment systems, exploring their diverse uses and significant applications.

How Biological Treatment Systems Work

At the core of biological treatment systems is the principle of using living organisms to break down pollutants. These systems employ bacteria, fungi, algae, and other microorganisms that consume pollutants as their source of food and energy. The process typically occurs in a controlled environment where conditions such as temperature, pH, and oxygen levels are optimised to enhance the efficiency of pollutant degradation.

There are two main types of biological treatment processes: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic processes require oxygen and are effective at breaking down organic compounds found in municipal and industrial wastewater. Common aerobic systems include activated sludge processes, biofilters, and aerated lagoons. In contrast, anaerobic processes do not require oxygen and are used to treat sludges and organic waste streams, producing biogas as a by-product. This biogas, primarily composed of methane, can be harnessed as a renewable energy source.

Uses of Biological Treatment Systems

  • Wastewater Treatment: Biological treatment systems are pivotal in wastewater management, where they help reduce the organic load and nutrient content from domestic, industrial, and agricultural effluents. By converting harmful pollutants into stable, inert substances, these systems ensure that the treated water can be safely discharged into natural water bodies or reused.
  • Soil Remediation: In the context of environmental clean-up, biological treatment systems are employed to remediate contaminated soils. Techniques such as bioaugmentation (adding cultured microorganisms) and biostimulation (enhancing native microorganisms by altering environmental conditions) are used to degrade organic pollutants like petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, and solvents.
  • Air Pollution Control: Biofilters and biotrickling filters are specific types of biological treatment systems used to treat air streams contaminated with odorous compounds and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Microorganisms in these systems metabolise the pollutants in the air stream, thereby purifying the air.
  • Solid Waste Treatment: Biological processes play a crucial role in the decomposition of organic matter in solid wastes. Composting and anaerobic digestion are two prevalent biological methods that transform organic waste into stable, nutrient-rich compost or digestate, which can be used as a soil conditioner or a low-grade fertiliser.

Applications and Benefits

Biological treatment systems find applications across various industries due to their effectiveness and environmental friendliness. In the agricultural sector, these systems are used to treat animal waste, converting it into safer, more manageable forms. Industrial applications include the treatment of effluents from pharmaceuticals, food and beverage production, and chemical manufacturing, which often contain complex organic compounds.

The environmental benefits of these systems are significant. They help in reducing the release of untreated or toxic waste into the environment, thus preserving aquatic life and maintaining the ecological balance. Furthermore, the reduction of waste volume through biological treatment reduces the burden on landfills and promotes the recycling and reuse of waste materials.

Moreover, the energy generation aspect of anaerobic systems provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, aligning with global efforts towards energy sustainability and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Summing up, biological treatment systems represent a sophisticated integration of nature and technology aimed at solving some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our times. Their ability to efficiently transform waste into less harmful substances while also generating valuable by-products like biogas illustrates a proactive approach to environmental management.
