Curious about escape games but not quite sure what to expect? Read on to discover four of the most common puzzles you’ll find in popular escape games.
1. Word and number games
Looking to show off your speed calculation skills or linguistic wit? You’ll be pleased to know that almost all escape games usually include some type of game with numbers and texts. Math problems are usually on the easy side, with Sudoku problems or basic algebra equations being the most popular. As for word games, you’re likely to come across riddles, crosswords, and missing-letter puzzles. Note that these games might also involve hands-on or multiple parts, like piecing together a torn-up letter or hunting for number clues scattered around the room, just to add a little twist.
2. Physical puzzles
Alongside the more cerebral type of puzzles, escape games also involve problems that require a little more physicality. You might have to undo a complex knot or get the team together to move a heavy item of furniture out of the way to reveal a secret trap door. Physical puzzles can be just as challenging and great for coming together as a team.
3. Hidden objects
There’s always someone on every team who loves scouring through the room in search of hidden objects. Our tip for the bloodhounds? Leave no drawer unopened! Feel around for false sides in drawers and cabinets, look through books for secret compartments, and have a prod at anything that can be moved, lifted, or shifted.
4. Lighting clues
Pay attention to how the room is lit up. Are there any areas of items that seem suspiciously under-lit, or alternatively, suspiciously over-lit? It might just be a big old glaring clue. Also, if you get a black light flashlight, be sure to use it generously. Sweep it all over the room, and you may just come across some helpful codes and messages written in invisible ink.
