The Future is Now: Electric Motor Technology in Overdrive

When it comes to electric vehicles, most of the focus tends to be on battery technology and charging. This is for good reason as the battery components of electric vehicles make a big difference in efficiency, maintenance and cost-of-ownership considerations. But what about electric motors?

While the electric motor has been around for over 100 years, it hasn’t been until recent decades that AC motor manufacturers have begun to see the potential for full-scale vehicle production using electric solutions. Today, advanced electric motor manufacturer technology has provided increasingly cost-effective components that deliver energy-efficient solutions without sacrificing performance.

It’s true that these advancements have largely been driven by improvements in battery technology and charging station implementation; however, increased efficiency in power management has given rise to motor designs that may one day become the standard for transportation across the world.

Currently, all-electric vehicles are a relative rarity on America’s highways, but more and more drivers are discovering the benefits of investing in electric. Additionally, the introduction of hybrid technology has already set the stage for the acceptance of electric vehicles in a world that has been dominated by gas-powered engines since the late 1800s.

Powering the Future

Electric motor manufacturers are constantly working on improvements in the technology behind powering modern vehicles. Electric motors have been used for decades in all types of vehicles to operate various components like windows, door locks and air conditioning systems; however, if you represent a forward-thinking electric motor manufacturer, you’re already implementing electrical designs meant to power entire vehicles.

Another aspect to this progress is that motors powered by electricity aren’t simply for road vehicles anymore. Research is currently focused on delivering solutions for aviation and marine craft to utilize electric motors as well. While there are still challenges in these industries, partnering with an AC motor manufacturer may be the first step for commercial and passenger vessel makers to take advantage of advancements in electric technology.

Replacing Parts Could Become Easier

One of the biggest concerns drivers have when it comes to electric vehicles is the cost and difficulty involved in replacing parts. Computers already control so many aspects of vehicles powered by fossil fuels, and in an electric vehicle or a vehicle that relies heavily on electric motor technology, this is even more apparent.

Because these systems are complex, replacing components or making custom changes can be next to impossible without advanced knowledge of electrical engineering and computer programming. To remedy this, electric motor parts manufacturer engineers are standardizing systems and components across various makes and models. This has the potential to allow drivers to have more control over their electric vehicles in the future, and it could also reduce replacement and repair costs.

Don’t Forget About Powertronics

Virtually everyone knows what electronics are, but have you ever heard of powertronics? Powertronics is the integration of power management systems in electric vehicles or systems that use electric motors. The powertronics components are vital in ensuring that electric power is distributed according to motor design specifications to keep everything balanced.

The integration of powertronics can be found in vehicles and systems that utilize in-wheel motors. These types of motors can control individual wheels to reduce spin or add torque for better control across a variety of surfaces. This, in turn, is not only a performance benefit, but it also plays a large part in driver safety.

Where Does This Road Lead?

Although big names like Tesla dominate the electric vehicle landscape in 2021, industry trends in electric motor manufacturing suggest that the future is bright for this growing technology. As advancements are made and efficient processes are hammered out, it’s likely that electric motors will become a standard alongside traditional engines. In time, they may even surpass motors that rely on fossil fuels, and drivers stand to benefit the most from such improvements.
