Understanding Out-Patient Care for Addiction Treatment

There are a number of ways that one can complete drug rehabilitation. One way is to receive out-patient care. While some addicts do need long-term in-patient treatment, there are many who can benefit from out-patient treatment, and overcome their addictions. Out-patient care is often the first choice because of the freedom it offers.

The patients do not have to live at a treatment centre and the can usually come and go as they please. Of course, this type of addiction treatment relies on the honour system, but it can be extremely effective when the patient is serious about recovery.

Where to Find Out-Patient Recovery Programs

Those who want to take the first step to addiction recovery and who are interested in out-patient programs have many options available. One of the first things to do is to talk to a physician or a counsellor for recommendations. Often, these programs are available through mental health centres, hospitals, and other medical centres. There are actually a lot more out-patient treatment options available than in-patient options.

The Benefits of Out-Patient Recovery Programs

There are several benefits to taking part in out-patient drug addiction treatment programs. For starters, patients can receive the same care that is available through in-patient programs, but things aren’t as rigid, and the environment can vary. The patient is able to go on with their day-to-day life, going to work, spending time with family and friends, etc.

For some patients, anonymity is extremely important, and they have a better chance of staying anonymous when they opt for out-patient treatment. There are also many support programs available when a patient receives out-patient care, including groups such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Who is a Good Candidate for Out-Patient Treatment?

There are some addicts who absolutely must have in-patient treatment in order to succeed in their recovery, because they need that support system. Others can benefit just as much from out-patient treatment.

The best candidates for out-patient care are: those who have mild addictions; those who can be treated with medications that will help them get through detox; those who can’t afford a long-term in-patient program; and those who have a strong support system of family, friends, and medical professionals to help them every step of the way.

The rate of success depends on the individual patient. While some can get by with just the out-patient care they receive, others need additional help. This can be in the form of group therapy sessions, 12-step programs, and other outside support groups. The time it takes to complete a program also depends on the individual. In most cases, patients need at least 10 to 20 hours of counselling each week, in addition to a couple of hours of weekly intensive psychological therapy.

The results of out-patient addiction treatment vary from patient to patient. It really all depends on the level of commitment the patient has to the program, and making sure that they find the right program for their addiction. It’s time to take that step and seek treatment, and start living a normal life.
