A walker is a great item that can be used for people of all ages to regain independence and remain mobile. While there are many different walker types to choose from, there are also many different accessories that can be purchased in order to make the walker more practical and more useful. Accessories can typically be purchased locally at home mobility stores or online as well. Some of the most commonly used Walker accessories include the following:
Accessory Hooks
If you are someone who likes to be on the go; shopping, visiting, etc. then you probably have realized when you have both hands on your walker, you don’t really have anywhere to hang bags and such. It can be awkward to hang a shopping bag on your arm while you move around so there are accessory hooks that attach to your walker which can be used to hang lightweight items onto your walker. This leaves your hands free to hold onto your walker for support.
Walker Glide Covers
Depending on what type of floor surfaces you are using your walker on, it can be beneficial to install some walker glide covers to the feet of your walker. This helps your walker glide easily over carpeting, linoleum or hard wood flooring. There are also special covers that can be used for ice and snow; for better traction.
Mobility Light
Little lights can be installed onto your walker to help light your way in the dark. This is beneficial if you have to use your walker during the night, but do not want to turn on a bunch of bright lights along your way. This will help you avoid any obstacles in your path.
Walker Tray
A walker can double as a table with a foldable walker tray. This is convenient if you want to use your walker to eat while you are away from home or you would like to put a craft or activity on your tray while you are out.
Pelvic Stabilizer
If you feel your body has trouble staying in line with your walker when you are in movement, you can have a pelvic stabilizer added to your walker. This item will keep your waist attached and in line with your walker so you will move safely from place to place.
There are a number of different accessories that can be added to a walker in order to increase how mobile and independent a person can be. Overall, independence leads to better mental and physical health as well. Most accessories are universal but it is always wise to check if certain items are designed with certain walker models in mind.
