Cosplay is associated to a great extent with comic books and anime. Many cosplay conventions transpire on these concepts. But from time to time, some cosplayers also organise get-togethers with other enthusiasts for photoshoots to admire one another’s work and share advice. This hobby requires a full transformation from head to toe, involving makeup, wigs, sewing, researching about your chosen character, and buying cosplay costumes online (or from a physical store)etc. At the same time, things can get complicated, and even then, cosplaying offers a whole new world of excitement and entertainment.
So, how do you approach putting together your first cosplay character? Here are some tips to consider:
Choose Your Cosplay Character
For a beginner, you may begin with a character with a simple costume or design, something you can put together easily. More importantly, pick a character you particularly love, regardless of your skin colour and gender.
After selecting your cosplay character, know the elements that comprise the overall look, including hair, shoes, accessories, jewellery, and garments. Do research on how you can bring the character to life. Part of the plan is how to get each component, whether sewing and making it yourself or purchasing it. Keep in mind that having no sewing skills can be a barrier in cosplay, but nothing is wrong with buying most of your costume or all of it.
What Makeup to Use
Factor in that you are going to stay at a cosplay convention throughout the day. It means you need to wear long-lasting makeup, including all-day lipstick, waterproof mascara, highlighter, face mask, etc. Also, note that there will probably be a lot of sweating with all the people in costumes at the event.
It is advisable to put on your makeup first, the way you want your look to be, before putting on your cosplay costume. This is because makeup can scatter on the chest, neck, or legs due to accidental rubbing against the costume. Also, if you are wearing a wig, wear it last.
If you will be on stage for photographs or performing a skit, it is best to wear stage makeup. In case your cosplay character has no makeup, wearing minimal makeup is still useful as it can help hide flaws and smooth out your face. You also can make your eyes and lashes look like an anime character too. If your character has a dark lash line, consider using liquid eyeliner.
How to Wear and Care for Wigs
One effective way to transform your look into an anime or comic book character is by wearing a wig. You may opt to use hair dye, but a wig offers more convenience as you can take it off immediately.
You may cut your wig if it is too big or long for your character. Style it with a gel or hairspray. You need to tame your natural hair under your wig, and a wig cap can help you with this. Also, use hairpins for added security. Make sure that they are invisible on your wig.
Wash your wig after every use to prevent unpleasant smell and sweat buildup. Wash it with liquid soap and cool water, and air-dry it afterwards. Steaming your wig is also an excellent way to clean it and detangle it.
If it is your first time to go to a cosplay convention, going there, well-prepared, can help lessen the nervousness and intimidation you may be feeling. How you create your costume and portray, your character is a matter of choice. As said before, you may even buy cosplay costumes online or from a physical store. And remember to have fun with other like-minded people.
